Peter Anderson to Write Another 100 Faces of Marin - 10 Years Later

In 1991, Marin native and career journalist Peter Anderson wrote a book titled "100 Faces of Marin." The author wrote, edited and published the coffee table-style volume as a labor of love honoring the place of his birth. He interviewed and wrote all of the subjects featured in the book; Marin photographer Cathy Shine took all of the photos.

The photo/essay project profiled a diverse assemblage of Marinites -- famous residents like George Lucas, Carlos Santana, Grace Slick, Huey Lewis, Mimi Farina, and Clarence Clemons were featured with local writers, activists, politicians, doctors, educators, business people and artists. The idea was to capture and portray the soul of Marin.

The book's black-and-white photography and simply displayed text resulted in a compelling people sketch of Marin County. Herb Caen of the San Francisco Chronicle enthused: "This is a lovely blend of the real Marin, as opposed to the phony 'Only in Marin' stereotypes purveyed by hack columnists South of the Towers. Peter Anderson's crisp, easy prose and Cathy Shine's sensitive photographs add up to a highly effective portrait of a special place."

"100 Faces of Marin" became a bestseller two months after it was published. Anderson promoted the book vigorously on Bay Area radio and TV stations, eloquently proclaiming his love of Marin and his admiration for its residents. Now, 10 years later, Anderson has decided to write another book of the same title, reflecting in the same writing style and photographic layout the dramatic changes that have transpired in Marin over the past decade. All 100 faces in this second book will be entirely new choices. While some thought has been given to honoring several of the original 100 faces in an updated "Hall of Fame"-style appendix in the new book, the principal intent is to cast light upon Marin residents who most currently contribute to this diverse county in ways that are positive, successful, creative and life-enhancing.

Proceeds from this new edition of the book will be shared with Roots of Peace, a Marin-based outfit devoted to turning land mines into agricultural/vineyard crops.

In this new version of Anderson's "100 Faces of Marin," well-known and widely regarded photographer Reggie Henkart has been selected to collaborate with the author to shoot all 100 photos. Henkart's work wears the stamp of authenticity and artistic interpretation. His photographs are sensitive portrayals of people captured for an evocative moment in life's drama.

Anderson -- a proud and successful father -- has a keen sense of social responsibility and a deep love of community, and he is thrilled to participate in a mission that will celebrate Marin’s ever-changing profile.
